PORTLAND — MaineHealth Behavioral Health announced the appointment of Benjamin C. Grasso, MD, as regional medical director. A resident of Scarborough, Dr. Grasso brings more than three decades of clinical, academic, and leadership experience in psychiatry and behavioral health care to this role.

In his position Dr. Grasso will oversee outpatient psychiatric services for York County, providing clinical leadership to support high-quality, patient-centered behavioral health services across the region. His experience spans inpatient and outpatient care, academic medicine, correctional health and executive medical leadership.

Dr. Grasso most recently served as a staff psychiatrist at the Maine Correctional Center and has previously held leadership roles at Riverview Psychiatric Center, Mercy Hospital and the Augusta Mental Health Institute, among others. Since 2013, he has also served as a consulting medical director for The Opportunity Alliance.

“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Grasso to MaineHealth Behavioral Health,” said Melissa Bowker-Kinley, MD, senior director of medical affairs, child and adolescent services. “Dr. Grasso’s vast experience makes him uniquely qualified to lead outpatient psychiatry in the York County region. He is nationally recognized for his work in reducing medication errors in psychiatric treatment and has demonstrated a deep commitment to community psychiatry across diverse populations, including veterans, incarcerated individuals and patients with severe mental illness. We look forward to the expertise and vision he brings to our team.”

Dr. Grasso earned his bachelor of arts in philosophy, summa cum laude, from SUNY Binghamton, where he was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa. He received his doctor of medicine degree from Albany Medical College and completed his internship and residency in psychiatry at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He later completed a fellowship in neuropsychiatry at the National Institutes of Mental Health.
