A storm moving into Maine on Tuesday night will bring fresh snow and ice to Greater Bangor.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for the southern half of the state. It will remain in effect from midnight Tuesday through 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Snow is expected to begin flying Tuesday night. It will dump 2-3 inches of fresh snow over Greater Bangor, with less than an inch forecast from Ellsworth to Eastport, according to the weather service station in Caribou.

The heaviest snow will be across the central highlands, with 3-4 inches forecast for Lincoln and Millinocket and 4-6 inches in Greenville and on Katahdin.

Up north, 2-3 inches of snow are currently projected to fall over an area stretching from Houlton to Caribou, with just 1-2 inches expected around Fort Kent.

That snow will begin changing to a mix of sleet and freezing rain in the lower Penobscot Valley and Down East Maine early Wednesday, which may lead to ice accumulation.

“Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the Wednesday morning commute,” a weather service advisory reads.

The forecast calls for up to a 10th of an inch of ice accumulation from Bangor to Eastport, with as much as a quarter inch possible in Wesley and Calais, the weather service reported.

That precipitation ought to taper by mid-afternoon Wednesday.
