PORTLAND – Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine, a  cornerstone of the community for over 115 years, plans to expand its Cumberland Avenue location as part of a proposed Greater Portland Youth Campus. Building on previous public  announcements, BGCSM is advancing planning efforts that include renovations to the existing site and the development of a 13,000 square-foot “Bridge to Success Center”, a  state-of-the-art hub for teens from communities across southern Maine, pending required  approvals. This transformative project will double capacity, allowing up to 500 kids and teens to be supported daily.

BGCSM’s core mission is to provide a safe environment where, together with youth  development mentors, children and teens can explore, learn and develop skills in the arts, academics, leadership and health and wellness. Over the years, thousands of youths (ages 5-18) have benefitted from these programs, and many are today’s leaders in business, government, academics and the trades throughout Maine.

In looking to the future, BGCSM is responding both to the growing need for after-school  programs and to the lack of community and school space for career and technical training. In addition to its core programs, the new “James and Hilla Bruni Bridge to Success Center” will house a virtual-reality career exploration lab and three open “garage bays” where hands-on training for various trades will occur.

“Our vision is to equip the next generation with the tools they need to lead, inspire and succeed,” said Colleen Cooper, BGCSM CEO. “This expansion is a significant step toward fulfilling that promise, providing not only expanded and modern program space for  elementary and middle school children in our historic Clubhouse but also a dedicated center for teens who need space to gather, grow and learn during their pivotal years while  preparing for their futures.”

In an innovative partnership with Avesta Housing, BGCSM is donating land on Cedar Street, where Avesta will develop up to 30 new homes, replacing more housing than what is being removed during construction. Avesta Housing is the largest nonprofit affordable housing  provider in northern New England and has been developing and managing quality,  affordable homes for more than 50 years. “Part of our responsibility as long-time stewards  in our community is to do what we can to not only support our youth but also make sure we  contribute to the viability of our community. Housing is an issue many of our members and  their families face, and we are proud to partner with Avesta in a collaborative effort to strengthen our community,” Cooper added

“Avesta Housing is honored to partner with Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine on this impactful project,” said Jennifer Hawkins, president & CEO of Avesta Housing. “This collaboration allows us to increase the availability of much-needed affordable housing in Portland while supporting a critical community resource for youth development. We are proud to play a role in enhancing the Bayside neighborhood for generations to come.”

The construction of the Teen Center and new apartment building marks a pivotal moment for BGCSM as it continues its legacy of community support and empowerment. The project is currently in the planning and approvals phase, with construction anticipated to begin in  the spring, following required city approvals.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine has been a trusted and enduring presence in the Portland  community for over a century, providing a safe, nurturing environment where young people can  learn, grow, and thrive. With programs spanning academics, technology, the arts, physical activity and leadership development, BGCSM empowers youth to reach their full potential.
