A Corinth man allegedly shot his mother after she pushed his dog away from hers because the animals do not get along, court records said.

Daniel Derosier, 22, is charged with intentional or knowing murder in Penobscot County Superior Court. He allegedly shot his mother, Abigail Thomas, 41, around 8:28 a.m. Saturday, at their home in Village Green Trailer Park.

Derosier had moved in with his family the week of Thanksgiving because his mental health was improving and they were going to give him another chance, according to the probable cause affidavit.

On the day of the shooting, Thomas’ husband woke up to her and Derosier arguing around 6 a.m. about how Derosier treats his dog. It progressed into Derosier yelling at Thomas and becoming manic, the affidavit said.

He burned some cash and told the couple that they no longer have money for rent and then smashed their cellphone with a hammer, the affidavit said.

Thomas’ husband hugged Derosier and told him to take a walk or move so that it helps change his manic state. Derosier had a handgun in his pocket and pushed it threateningly into the man, according to the affidavit.

At that point, Thomas’ husband told Derosier he wasn’t scared and that if Derosier shot him, he would go to be with his deceased mother, the affidavit said.

Thomas’ teenage son told police that he saw Thomas display a knife to Derosier at some point during the fight but put it away. Thomas used her phone to record some of the altercations, the affidavit said.

Things quieted down for a short time after the hug, the affidavit said.

Thomas and her husband were in their bedroom with their dog on the bed when Derosier’s dog ran into the room and jumped on the bed. The dogs don’t get along and Thomas pushed Derosier’s dog off the bed, the affidavit said.

Within seconds, Derosier pulled the gun out of his pocket and shot Thomas in the head, her husband saw, according to the affidavit. Thomas fell to the ground and her husband immediately ran to help her, the affidavit said.

The teenage son was also in the room and saw Derosier shoot Thomas, the affidavit said.

Thomas’ husband yelled at his teenage son to run out of the home, which he did and took shelter in a neighbor’s trailer, the affidavit said. Thomas’ husband didn’t leave her side until first responders arrived.

Derosier brought the gun with him when he moved in, Thomas’ husband told police.

After the shooting, Derosier asked Thomas’ husband to help him come up with an alibi and say that someone had broken in and shot her, but the husband refused. He said Derosier needs to take accountability for his actions, according to the affidavit.

When police arrived a neighbor said Derosier was wearing a yellow jacket and had a bald head. Police found him and arrested him while he was walking through the mobile home park, the affidavit said.

Derosier was denied bail Monday and remains in the Penobscot County Jail.
