Chiefs Staff Stops Cameras From Following Travis Kelce After Christmas Loss

A Prime Video cameraman was faced with an awkward moment after the Kansas City Chiefs lost to the Denver Broncos on Christmas Day.

The live broadcast on Thursday, December 25, featured cameras following Travis Kelce as he interacted with fans in Arrowhead Stadium. However, when they went to follow the tight end on his walk back to the locker room, it seemed a Chiefs staffer had a major issue.

“I’ve told you,” one man wearing a Chiefs sweatshirt could be heard saying to the cameras before bringing over another man in a suit. The second staffer appeared to be blocking the cameras from walking down the hallway.

The game’s newscasters were equally as confused as viewers, trying to figure out what was going on. One person could be heard explaining that they won’t “let a camera go down the hallway for whatever reason.” Another voiceover noted that Kelce, 36, was “ready to roll,” with his back visible as he walked away from the cameras.

Thursday marked Kelce’s final home game of the NFL season, and his fiancée, Taylor Swift, was in attendance. The Chiefs ultimately lost to the Broncos 20-13.

Some fans (and newscasters) have speculated that the Christmas Day matchup was the final home game of Kelce’s career. However, Kelce has made it clear that his athletic future is still up in the air and he hasn’t made any retirement decisions just yet.

“I think I’d rather just keep the focus of the media and everything on this team right now,” Kelce said during a press conference earlier this month. “All the conversations that I have with the team and everything moving forward will be with them.”

The cameraman incident on Thursday came after Kelce received widespread criticism from newscasters — specifically ESPN’s Chris Russo — after the athlete refused to talk to the media after the Chiefs were eliminated from the NFL playoffs following their loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on December 14. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes also tore his ACL during the game, which put him on the sideline for the rest of the season.

“Sorry, guys, it’s not the time,” Kelce told reporters after the game. “I’ll catch you guys during the week.”

Days later, Russo had an impassioned response to Kelce’s comment to the media.

“How about Kelce on Sunday afternoon?” he said during ESPN’s First Take on December 17. “They just lose a game. Mahomes tears his ACL. The last play of the game [backup quarterback Gardner] Minshew goes to Kelce to try and kick a field goal. Intercepted. And Kelce, after he settles down in the locker room, he says, ‘Not today, fellas. I’m not going to talk to you.’”

Russo continued, “We got these poor guys who have been covering the Chiefs for years, who go to every training camp, practice, every preseason game. Every day for seven months they cover the football team and you blow them off at the end of this game when they got Mahomes out? Maybe the last game you’re ever gonna play [with him]? You can’t give them three words?”

Russo didn’t end there, continuing his message to Kelce.

“You blow everybody off walking off the field and you don’t talk to the press and you get in the car?” he added. “That is wrong. That is not the way to do things. You give them five minutes. Give them a couple of sentences for the Chiefs fans. Really down on him.”
