‘The Life of Chuck’ (2024)
Charles “Chuck” Krantz (Tom Hiddleston) appears to be just like every other man. A 39-year-old accountant, he has a loving wife and child and doesn’t seem that special. But when he dies, the universe will implode, causing everyone and everything to cease to exist. Why? Well, to find the answer, you’ll have to bear witness to the life of Chuck, from his death to his childhood. But even then, you might not get the answer you’re looking for.
Based on a novella from Stephen King, The Life of Chuck is a trippy film that doesn’t bother with convention all that much. The movie is divided into 3 acts told in reverse chronological order, so you begin with the death of the universe and then work your way back from there. The movie tackles some heavy themes, but it’s surprisingly cheerful and hopeful. Largely ignored when it was released last summer, The Life of Chuck is one of the most innovative sci-fi movies of 2025, and it deserves a bigger audience in 2026 and beyond.

‘Inheritance’ (2025)
At her mother’s funeral, Maya (Phoebe Dynevor) is surprised to see her long-absent father, Sam (Rhys Ifans), show up. He wants to make amends by offering her a job, which Maya reluctantly accepts. But as she travels to exotic locations like Egypt, she begins to suspect her father isn’t who he says he is. When he’s kidnapped and held for ransom, Maya must confront not only the true nature of her father’s business but whether or not it’s worth risking her life for a man she barely knows.
Shot entirely on an iPhone, Inheritance is an intriguing lo-fi thriller that weaves a complex plot involving only two main characters. For a large chunk of the movie, Maya is kept in the dark about her mysterious father and what kind of shady business he’s involved in. But as the truth reveals itself, the movie becomes richer and better. The film’s DIY approach puts you right into Maya’s shoes, and you’re right there with her as she discovers one shocking surprise after another. Inheritance is the rare movie that succeeds in two very different genres — it’s a suspenseful globe-trotting thriller that also works as an intimate father/daughter drama.

‘The Leisure Seeker’ (2017)
John and Ella Spencer (Donald Sutherland and Helen Mirren) have been married for decades and still love each other with the same passion they had when they first met. Bored with their current lives, they decide to take an impromptu road trip from Massachusetts to Florida so John can see his literary hero Ernest Hemingway’s home in Key West. But as they travel from state to state, it becomes apparent that their latest vacation will be their last — Ella has terminal cancer, and John doesn’t quite know how to come to terms with that.
Believe it or not, The Leisure Seeker is a comedy, as evident when Ella confronts two would-be carjackers with a fully loaded shotgun. The movie’s tone is a little all over the place, but it largely works due to Sutherland and Mirren, who convincingly create a portrait of a long-married couple who still care for each other despite their day-to-day frustrations with one another. If more people had a marriage like theirs, they’d all be better for it.
