BRUNSWICK – “We’re in a better place because of it.”

The words of Nicole, one of over 1,000 individuals and families who visit Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program each month, encapsulate the purpose and driving mission of a program that has become one of the largest hunger-relief organizations in Maine.

“Our staff and volunteers are deeply passionate about and committed to improving the quality of life of our neighbors here in Midcoast Maine through access to high quality, no cost food,” said Hannah Chatalbash, executive director, who has served at the Brunswick-based program for over a decade.

The impact is equal parts impressive and staggering. In addition to the main food pantry, MCHPP operates satellite pantries serving over 220,000 meals per year, three school pantries, a community kitchen for internal food processing and community member use, the gleaning of nearly 60,000 pounds of local produce, a delivery program for the homebound and much more.

The program is an invaluable piece of the Midcoast and Norway Savings Bank was proud to pay a surprise visit to the organization this week, delivering a “Holiday Helping Hands” donation of $2,500. NSB team members have made visits to many Maine and New Hampshire nonprofits over the last few weeks to give them an extra boost during the season of giving.

“It’s a privilege to support MCHPP,” said Dan Walsh, president and CEO of Norway Savings Bank. “They are committed to addressing food insecurity, of course, but it’s the way in which they provide that access that is truly remarkable. Staff and volunteers treat clients with such kindness and preserve the dignity of all they serve.”

As the need has grown, so has human assistance from around the Brunswick area. Last year, over 700 volunteers helped the cause. Norway Savings Bank team members have volunteered at the program for years and even contributed to a limited-edition cookbook called “Colorful Cooking Solutions” filled with more than 100 sweet and savory, family-style recipes. The cookbook was sold at NSB branches with all proceeds benefitting MCHPP and other smaller pantries.

“The contributions of community members and organizations like Norway Savings are incredibly important and meaningful,” said Chatalbash. “We’re so grateful for the commitment of so many people as we continue to seek new and expanded opportunities to feed our community and support the economic wellbeing of all our Midcoast neighbors.”
