FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Adrianna Smith registered her sixth double-double of the season as the Black Bears dropped a 74-51 decision at Fairfield on Friday evening.
The Black Bears fell behind 24-9 after the first quarter but battled to cut the lead down to just five in the second quarter.
Smith finished the evening 7-of-19 from the floor and 5-of-5 from the free throw stripe for 19 points to go along with 12 rebounds for her 44th career double-double. Asta Blauenfeldt returned to the double-figure scoring totals with 17 points.
The Black Bears finished 19-of-39 from the floor (48.7) and held a 31-22 edge in rebounding.
Maine, trailing 24-9 entering the second quarter, opened the period with a 13-3 run. Maddie Fitzpatrick drove down the lane for two while getting fouled. Following her made free throw, buckets from Blauenfeldt and Lizzy Gruber cut Fairfield’s lead down to seven. Two free throws by Smith concluded the run as the Black Bears trimmed the deficit all the way down to just five.
However, it would be as close as the Black Bears could get. Fairfield would go on to outscore Maine 41-27 in the second half to secure the victory, 74-51.
Maine returns to action on Sunday when it travels to meet Quinnipiac at 1 p.m.
