Camden Hills boys stay undefeated with win over Bangor

The Camden Hills Windjammers proved yet again on Saturday why they are going to be one of the top teams in Class A North boys basketball this season.

The Windjammers ran away from Bangor in the fourth quarter to beat the home Rams 62-34 on Saturday afternoon.

“The final score is certainly not indicative of the battle that it was to come up here and get a win,” Camden Hills head coach Joel Gabriele said.

The visiting coach called Saturday’s game a grind-it-out slugfest and said it was a “gritty win” for his team.

It certainly didn’t hurt that Camden can boast one of the best players in the state, senior guard Nolan Ames, who scored a game-high 29 points.

That included a pivotal stretch in the first half where Ames scored 10-straight points, turning a 11-8 lead for Bangor into an 18-11 lead for Camden.

Ames produced a string of highlight reel material, with a high-flying first half dunk in transition topping the list.

“It’s my teammates getting me open looks, my coach drawing up good plays and getting me open,” Ames said after the win.

He called Bangor a “very tough team” and said the difference Saturday was that Camden was eventually able to find their game and run away with it.

The Windjammers outscored the Rams 20-3 in the final quarter, which started with Bangor down 11 with a score of 42-31 entering the final period.

Senior forward Harry Fitzpatrick led the scoring for Bangor with 11 and sophomore Nate Grunkemeyer had eight for the Rams.

Bangor coach Jay Kemble said his team had some missed opportunities to cut into the lead in the fourth quarter, while crediting the Camden squad.

“But I thought for three quarters, we competed and played hard,” Kemble said. “They’re a good club.”

Camden stayed undefeated with the win and moved to 4-0, at the top of Class A North so far this season. Bangor is now 2-2 as the Rams continue to rebuild after only winning a single game last year.
