An elementary school in the town of Alton, just north of Old Town, was locked down as a precaution on Wednesday morning after a report of a man walking with a gun on a nearby road.
The Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office got a report at about 8:10 a.m. of a man carrying a rifle on Bennoch Road near the intersection of Alton Tannery Road. The caller said the man may have pointed the gun at passing vehicles, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.
Multiple deputies went to the area, and the sheriff’s office notified officials at Alton Elementary School, located about a mile north of the intersection, who initiated a lockdown of the building.
Police determined that the man got a ride from the area, possibly to Bangor. Among multiple witnesses interviewed by police, none reported seeing a rifle, the sheriff’s office said.
