UMaine Extension to offer poultry education for backyard producers

BANGOR — University of Maine Cooperative Extension, in partnership with the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation, and Forestry, will host a free poultry education program on Monday, Dec.15 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. at the UMaine Extension Penobscot County office, 307 Maine Avenue.

The half-day session is designed for backyard chicken keepers and small-scale poultry producers. Participants will learn about chick brooding, winter care, basic nutrition, flock health and pest management. Presenters include Madison Philbrick, M.S., DACF animal health livestock specialist; Colt W. Knight, Ph.D., UMaine Extension state livestock specialist; and Hillary Peterson, Ph.D., DACF integrated pest management specialist.

The program is free and includes a poultry care book and a starter biosecurity kit for each attendee. Registration is required and available on the program webpage.
