Three tenants were displaced and two cats were lost after a fire engulfed their Fort Fairfield residence on Monday.
Officials responded to the fire at 46 Fort Hill St. at around 8:14 a.m. to find smoke and flames coming from the apartment building. One of the tenants that lived on the second floor had noticed smoke coming from the upstairs rooms, found fire coming from the top of his apartment door, and called 911.
Another tenant that lived on the second floor was unable to leave the apartment due to the smoke and flames blocking the exit, and had to break a window and slide down the roof to escape the building. He injured his legs while he was escaping the fire.
The third tenant that lived on the first floor was able to leave the building without issue after he noticed smoke coming from his apartment.
Two cats were unable to escape the building.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the state fire marshals office.
Multiple fire departments arrived at the scene, including firefighters from Perth-Andover, New Brunswick.
