ROCKLAND, Maine — The driver of the school bus that struck and killed 12-year-old Brayden Callahan is no longer employed by Regional School Unit 13.
Superintendent John McDonald made the announcement at the school board’s Wednesday night meeting. The superintendent offered no additional details.
The bus driver, Jeffrey E. Colburn, 65, of Camden, began working for RSU 13 in August 2016, according to the district’s website. He was placed on administrative leave after the Nov. 21 crash.
The board went into a closed-door executive session at the end of the meeting to discuss a personnel matter. No more specifics were given.
During the meeting, each school official who spoke expressed their condolences to Brayden’s family, his friends, staff, students and the entire community.
McDonald said he is the parent of two children and can’t imagine the loss of a child.
“This has shaken the district to the core,” McDonald said.
The superintendent listed the steps that the district has taken to provide support for students and staff, including the bus drivers who are all shaken by the student’s death.
Board Chair Kelli McCannell said RSU 13 is a small community and everyone is in pain.
The meeting was held online via Teams rather than in-person as originally scheduled. No reason for the change was given.
