The official trailer for season 5 of Emily in Paris hints at some big changes — but does that include Lucas Bravo potentially exiting the show as Gabriel?
In the sneak peek, which Netflix debuted on Wednesday, December 3, Emily (Lily Collins) is adjusting to life in Rome with Marcello (Eugenio Franceschini). She does seem to miss her life back in Paris, which is when Gabriel (Bravo) briefly showed up for a heart-to-heart conversation.
“But now I’m excited for the future,” he told his now-ex-girlfriend in the first look. “I think you should be too.”
Emily and Gabriel are then seen embracing before he seemingly gets on a train to go somewhere. He could be visiting Rome before returning to Paris — or the clip could be a glimpse into something more significant.
Which ‘Emily in Paris’ Stars Have Left the Netflix Series Over the Years?
Fans have questioned the role Gabriel will play on the show after his split from Emily. Bravo’s role has also remained largely unclear after the first teaser for the season didn’t include any scenes of Gabriel.
“I would love to tell you something,” he told E! News in October about his absence in promotional material. “I like the fact that I’m not in the trailer and that it creates a conversation, and I’m gonna keep the conversation running. I won’t say anything.”
Bravo, 37, leaned into the questions about whether this hinted at his fate on the show, adding, “I don’t know. I’m not in it.”
The actor, who joined the show when it debuted in 2020, previously made headlines for expressing his frustration with Gabriel’s story.
“In season 1, there was a lot of me in him. But as they made him kind of unaware of his surroundings, of the dynamic, always victimizing and always being completely lost in translation and oblivious to anything that is happening around him and being manipulated by everyone, it kind of became not fun for me to shoot,” he told IndieWire in October 2024. “Or to see a character I love so much and brought me so much, being slowly turned into guacamole. I really grew apart from him.”
Bravo even hinted that he might step away from Emily in Paris.
“It makes me question if I want to be part of season 5 — because my contract ends at season 4. I really want to see if Gabriel gets back to his fun, cheeky, playful, alive self,” he continued. “Because three seasons playing melancholic, sad, depressed and lost is not fun anymore. It’s a comedy, everybody is having fun around me, everybody is jumping around, and I’m just slowly sinking into God knows what.”
Bravo signed on for season 5 after Netflix renewed the series. At the time, a source spoke to Us Weekly about what Bravo’s frustration meant for Emily in Paris, saying, “The show is Emily in Paris — not Gabriel in Paris. Everyone is so upset about the remarks he made. There is going to be a lot of tension.”
While it remains to be seen how Gabriel will be explored in season 5, the show is also reeling from Camille Razat‘s shocking exit. News broke in April that the actress was stepping back from Emily in Paris.
“After an incredible journey, I’ve made the decision to step away from Emily in Paris,” Razat told TVLine at the time. “It has been a truly wonderful experience — one filled with growth, creativity and unforgettable memories. I’m deeply grateful to Darren Star and the entire team at Netflix and Paramount for their trust and for giving me the opportunity to bring Camille to life and leaving the door open for her return, as she will always be a part of Emily in Paris world.”
Which ‘Emily in Paris’ Stars Are — and Aren’t — Returning for Season 5?
Casting director Juliette Ménager later offered insight into the decision.
“She wanted to take a little break,” Ménager told Variety in an interview published in August. “But she could maybe come back. As [creator] Darren [Star] told me — from his experience on long-running shows like Beverly Hills 90210, Melrose Place or Sex and the City — the cast becomes a family, and it’s like with your family, sometimes you need a little breather and then you come back.”
Elsewhere in Wednesday’s trailer, a new romance appeared to be developing between Emily’s ex Alfie (Lucien Laviscount) and best friend Mindy (Ashley Park).
“Expect the unexpected,” Laviscount, 33, exclusively told Us Weekly last month. “I know that when I first got the pilot [for the season 5 premiere], I was taken aback a little bit.”
Laviscount is excited for fans to see the final product. “But again, the Emily in Paris universe just keeps on churning out great stuff,” he hinted. “I leave all my fate in the writers. This season is a fun one.”
Emily in Paris returns Thursday, December 18, on Netflix.
