A Tuesday storm could drop up to an inch of snow an hour over parts of Maine.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for a large portion of the state from York to Washington counties. That remains in effect until 7 a.m. Wednesday.

It’s the first major snowstorm of the season for Maine, which is expected to pick up in the late morning, and the weather service warns that it could drop up to an inch an hour Tuesday evening.

Greater Bangor could see up to 7 inches of snow, while Bar Harbor to Machias could see up to 4 inches, the weather service office in Caribou reported early Tuesday morning.

Up to a foot of powder is anticipated for parts of western Hancock County and interior Washington County.

Meanwhile, lesser amounts are expected to the north, with just 5 inches forecast for Houlton, 3 inches for Caribou and 2 inches for Fort Kent.

Blowing snow is possible, particularly Wednesday morning, as this storm will be accompanied by winds up to 35 mph.

The bulk of the storm is expected to wrap up by early Wednesday morning.
