I never thought of Thanksgiving as an immigration story, yet it is. That is, the pilgrims arrived, seeking refuge from various forms of oppression and opportunities for a new life. It is presented as an inspiring part of the building of our nation. The pilgrims are not described as undocumented immigrants, which they were.
Centuries later, the Statue of Liberty became an iconic symbol of hope, freedom and welcome to immigrants. “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free” is etched on the pedestal and, for many of us whose families immigrated here, in our souls.
Throughout our history we have seen periods of anti-immigrant fervor full of hate, bigotry and unconstitutional actions. We are in such an era now. Federal policies and actions, fueled by fear and propaganda, have launched inhumane and unlawful immigration enforcement actions. Just google “ICE.” and “Border Patrol.”
The Maine Legislature passed LD 1971 to protect new Mainers from such horrors and shield our state law enforcement from participating in such actions. LD 1971 keeps our Maine law enforcement officials from taking on federal immigration duties. That’s it. Immigration is a federal matter.
The last step is for Gov. Janet Mills to allow the law to take effect. Let the governor know that you want LD 1971 to be enacted, that Mainers support the rule of law, will not succumb to fear and bigotry, and welcome new Mainers.
