Many of us in Maine clearly see that our freedoms and constitutional rights are threatened by the Department of Homeland Security’s paid vigilantes. We need legislation now to protect Maine people from these violent paramilitary groups.
Maine does have the opportunity to protect our constitutional rights although there is hesitation to downright refusal on the part of some of our elected officials to do so.
Rep. Grayson Lookner recently introduced a bill to the Legislative Council to prevent federal agents from wearing face coverings. The council rejected the bill.
Last year, LD 1971, which would restrict Maine law enforcement from collaborating with federal agencies, was passed by the Legislature It. Now it sits on Gov. Janet Mills’ desk because of her concerns that the bill is too restrictive. Our local taxes should be used for local law enforcement, not for federal enforcement!
Another bill passed last session, LD 1259, that prohibits Maine law enforcement’s collaboration with federal agents is going to be revisited in 2026.
The Cumberland County Commissioners have just voted to maintain a contract with Homeland Security to use the Portland jail to hold ICE detainees.
By contracting with and cooperating with Homeland Security, I believe Maine is capitulating to federal lawlessness. We must support proactive legislation to limit local law enforcement’s involvement with federal agents.
Call the governor and tell her to sign LD 1971 because you want your tax dollars to pay for local law enforcement, not federal enforcement. And let your legislators know you support the efforts of people and organizations who are working to keep Maine safe from federal terrorism.
