Post Malone will feel right at home when he headlines the halftime show during the Dallas Cowboys’ Thanksgiving Day game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Malone’s father, Rich Post, shared in a new interview that he worked as the Cowboys’ assistant director of food and beverage from 2005 to 2019, a surprising connection that makes his superstar son’s upcoming performance even more meaningful.

“It’s just beyond something that we could’ve imagined when he started this musical career or I started my job with the Dallas Cowboys,” Post, 59, told NBC 5 Dallas–Fort Worth on Tuesday, November 25.

Post — who moved his family from Syracuse, New York, to Grapevine, Texas, after getting the concessions job — joked that his “only” rule when Malone was growing up was that the “Circles” singer, now 30, had to “be a Cowboys fan.”

“You could be whatever else you wanted to be in life, but I don’t know that I could’ve taken family members in my house cheering against the Cowboys,” he said.

Post noted that Malone (real name Austin Richard Post) grew up going to Cowboys games at Texas Stadium and then AT&T Stadium. The Grammy nominee even delivered an impromptu performance during the team’s 2015 Christmas party.

“[It was] quite a moment for the Post family with all the Cowboys players and personnel videotaping my kid up on stage doing his hit at the time, ‘White Iverson,’” Post said.

Malone was so comfortable at the stadium, in fact, that he would even spend the night there on occasion as a child.

“He slept over there for years,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told reporters earlier this week, recalling that Malone even “had a cot” set up for him while his dad worked.

Jones, 83, added that he is “extraordinarily excited” for Malone to return to AT&T Stadium on Thursday, November 27, for the halftime show, which the “I Had Some Help” singer’s father will watch from a suite complete with a Thanksgiving dinner.

“[I will] get a turkey and some stuffing and mashed potatoes and enjoy all that all those fans got to experience the 14 years that I worked there,” Post told NBC 5.

The NFL announced on November 17 that three artists will perform at halftime on Thanksgiving this year: Malone during the Cowboys vs. Chiefs game on CBS, rock star Jack White during the Detroit Lions vs. Green Bay Packers game at Ford Field in Michigan on Fox and rapper Lil Jon during the Baltimore Ravens vs. Cincinnati Bengals game at M&T Bank Stadium in Maryland on NBC.

“I’m from Texas. I grew up a Cowboys fan and have been watching this halftime show for years,” Malone said in a statement at the time. “It’s a real honor to be part of the Red Kettle Kickoff with The Salvation Army and the Dallas Cowboys and help bring hope to so many people.”
