LEWISTON, Maine — Lewiston’s new police chief, Carly Conley, said Monday she was committed to earning the city’s trust over and over again.
“Being your police chief is a privilege, and I recognize the responsibilities that come with that,” she said.
Conley, who is also the city’s first female police chief, was sworn in at a ceremony at Lewiston City Hall, surrounded by family, friends and fellow officers in full dress uniform.
Conley, according to a statement from the city, has served on the Lewiston Police Department since 2001. She has served in a variety of roles, including patrol duty, the department’s selective enforcement team that works with federal agencies, as domestic violence coordinator and as a detective in the department. She was promoted to lieutenant in 2012.
Kaenrath said Conley was one of 18 candidates for the position vacated by David St. Pierre, who retired as chief in September after 33 years with the department.
On Monday, Kaenrath said Conley’s longevity with the department was “a big factor” in her selection.
“Carly has an incredible record at the LPD and some great plans for the city coming into the future so we’re very excited to begin this new chapter,” he said.
Conley, in remarks just after her swearing in, outlined her vision for the department going forward, which includes working closely with residents.
“My vision is this: A police department that is visible, accessible, engaged, officers in the neighborhoods, working with residents, building trust day by day,” she said.
Kaenrath said the city will be holding two public sessions where Conley will be available to speak directly with the public. The first will be on Dec. 10, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Geiger Elementary School, 601 College St. The city will announce the time and date of the other session at a later date.
