The late Byron and Susan Delano were inducted into the Maine Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame on Saturday, Nov. 1 at Pineland Farms in New Gloucester.
The Hall of Fame recognizes individuals who bring distinction to Maine through competition as athletes or coaches; those who pioneered the sport, manufacturers, area builders and operators, instructors, volunteers and others who have made significant contributions to the winter sports.
The Delanos were one of six couples in the early 60s who invested in and built Mt. Jefferson in Lee. When most other investors dropped out, the Delanos persevered and took full ownership, investing in the downhill ski area and expanding the facilities. Byron’s son Dan said upon accepting the award, “We never made any money. If a family showed up with only a few dollars Dad would tell them to take some skis and go skiing.”
