University of Maine Cooperative Extension, the Maine Beef Producers Association and the Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry will host the Maine Cattlemen’s College from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6 at the DACF Deering Building, 90 Blossom Lane in Augusta.
This year’s event will cover all aspects of cattle artificial insemination. Participants will learn male and female reproductive anatomy/physiology, semen handling, liquid nitrogen tank basics, heat detection and synchronization, AI technique, basics of palpation and hands-on learning with our sophisticated Bovine Breeder AI Simulator and reproductive tracts. This condensed, day-long course is a combination of classroom learning and hands-on AI training. Instructors include Glenda Pereira, UMaine Extension dairy specialist and UMaine School of Food and Agriculture assistant professor; Colt Knight, associate Extension professor and state livestock specialist; and Jessica C. Lemos Motta, DVM, Ph.D., assistant professor of animal reproductive physiology for UMaine School of Food and Agriculture.
Course fee is $50 for Maine Beef Producers Association members and $75 for non-members. It is highly recommended that participants purchase the Select Sires Artificial Insemination Manual for $50. Participants can pay for the manual in the registration process and pick it up at the event. Register on the event website by Dec. 4.
