For good reason, Maine is the envy of the rest of the country.

We Mainers are lucky enough to live in a place that others dream about, whether it’s woods or waters that feel like home. But Maine isn’t only beautiful — it’s caring. When SNAP benefits were at risk, how many of us sprung into action to strengthen local support services? That’s just who we are. It’s also why we value strong local news.

According to recent research, we volunteer in our communities well above the national average, we’re first in the nation in attending public meetings, and we both vote more often and trust our neighbors more than residents of most other states. We like to be informed and use that information to be active in our communities.

“I take being a community member very seriously and I count on the BDN to keep me informed about that community.”
— Judith, Orono

Bangor Daily News is proud of our role in that success story, which is made possible by the committed support of our readers who know that news and information is a public good, just like sidewalks, libraries and schools. It’s how we stay connected and informed about issues that shape our communities, like heating assistance and school budgets. Written every day by people who live in and care about those same communities.

We protect our independence so we can ask hard questions and serve the public interest. When you support our work, you safeguard a public good that benefits everyone.

Through the end of the year we are working to raise $100,000 to support the BDN newsroom in 2026, and we invite you to join us.

Eastern Maine Development Corporation has partnered with the Bangor Daily News since 2024 as our fiscal sponsor, and has created the Fund for BDN Reporting to ensure that Maine continues to have a strong, independent daily source of news and information.

Your tax-deductible gift to the Fund supports the team that brings you verified, timely reporting on school boards, decisions in Augusta, emergencies and the local issues that shape daily life. It funds the essentials of journalism: reporter salaries, document fees and the miles traveled to tell Maine’s stories.

“I believe in local newspapers. You are the eyes and ears of the community and without you, we readers would be in the dark. You do an excellent job.”
— Anne, Brownfield

Your support makes a difference.

In the last year, gifts from BDN readers helped us hold Bangor officials accountable for unsafe public bathrooms, inspired citizen action in Milford and helped Washington County residents demand better from their treasurer.

We invite you to make an annual gift at whatever level feels right for you — guided by the value the Bangor Daily News brings to your life and community.

You can make a gift, and learn more about the Fund for BDN Reporting, at donate.bangordailynews.com.

If checks are more your speed, please make it out to Eastern Maine Development Corporation and write “Fund for BDN Reporting.” Send it to Bangor Daily News – community donations, at 1 Merchants Plaza, P.O. Box 1329, Bangor, ME 04402.

We’re so grateful for your readership, your business, for using our reporting to fuel your conversations and inspire your action, and for your support of the mission of local news.

Thank you.
