I read with great interest the front-page story on Graham Platner in the Nov. 11 Bangor Daily News. I had recently attended his town hall gathering in Calais and was curious to see what people who lived in his hometown had to say about him.
After reading the article, I was very pleased to see that my first impressions of this young man aligned with what those who’ve been around him thought as well. Noted in the article were several traits not lately associated with government types — trust, work ethic, honesty, and the willingness to listen to and work with all, while holding fast to the stated objectives. His neighbors stated that even when they disagreed with him, they still believed in his sincerity, his willingness to work smart and hard for the all. Wow!
My husband and I were truly impressed with Graham’s messages and his youthful enthusiasm and sense of hope and purpose that we witnessed at the Calais town hall meeting. We both left with a good feeling about him.
Since then, there has been word of his young man online comments, and a questionable tattoo. Well, who amongst us hasn’t made immature and rash decisions? We were lucky ours weren’t posted for posterity. Graham owned up to his youthful follies and I believe he has truly evolved as we all should as we mature. As my oldest son is always saying, “You do better when you know better.”
We remain staunch supporters of Graham, believing he will indeed fulfill his promises as our U.S. senator, jumping in and giving his all. We will proudly be voting for him.
