5. ‘Eddington’ (2025)
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 68 percent
Eddington crosses multiple genres as a drama, satire, Western and thriller. It’s also got a top-notch cast led by Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal, Emma Stone and Austin Butler. In 2020, COVID restrictions are weighing down on the people of Eddington, New Mexico, and the local sheriff, Joe Cross (Phoenix), sees it as his opportunity to run for mayor.
Joe’s wife, Louise Cross (Stone), is less than enthusiastic about the idea, and so is the town’s current mayor, Ted Garcia (Pascal). To win this election, Joe is willing to sink to any depths. And just when you think the movie can’t get any wilder, an unexpected danger arrives in town that may disrupt all of Joe’s hastily laid plans.
Eddington is streaming on HBO Max.
4. ‘Wakefield’ (2017)
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 74 percent
Breaking Bad‘s Bryan Cranston finds a new way to portray a man falling from grace in Wakefield. However, Howard Wakefield (Cranston) is no criminal. He’s just unhappy in his marriage to Diana (Jennifer Garner), and eager to avoid fighting old battles with her again and again. One evening, Howard simply doesn’t come home and observes his family’s reactions to his disappearance.
7 Must-Watch Drama Movies of the 2020s So Far, Ranked
Rather than letting his wife or daughters know he’s alive, Howard decides to abandon all of his responsibilities while watching them from his hidden vantage point. It may amuse him at first, but Howard’s choices may have boxed him into a corner from which there is no escape.
Wakefield is streaming on Tubi.
3. ‘American Murderer’ (2022)
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 75 percent
If you know the name Jason Derek Brown, then you may also be aware that this former member of the FBI’s 10 most wanted list hasn’t had a confirmed sighting in almost two decades. Despite a nationwide manhunt, Brown’s fate and whereabouts are still unknown in 2025. American Murderer tells Brown’s story, with Tom Pelphrey delivering a very strong performance as the main character. However, the title is a bit of a misnomer. It should have been American Conman, because Brown was a consummate swindler.
Ryan Phillippe costars as FBI Special Agent Lance Leising, the man charged with taking Brown down. That’s a tall order, because as seen in flashbacks, Brown’s not above using anything and anyone to stay one step ahead of the law. He has few, if any, moral qualms, and that makes him dangerous.
American Murderer is streaming on Hulu.
6 Must-Watch Drama Movies on Prime Video (November 2025): ‘The Iron Claw’ and More
2. ‘Nouvelle Vague’ (2025)
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 89 percent
Nouvelle Vague may be a little too esoteric for some viewers. This is a French movie made by an American director, Richard Linklater, that serves as a tribute to the French New Wave cinema movement. Linklater even shot it in black and white, kept it in French with English subtitles and imitated the aspect ratio of the film within the film. That’s some serious dedication to the bit.
The story is a dramatization of the making of Breathless, the debut movie by director Jean-Luc Godard (Guillaume Marbeck). Godard’s love for cinema knows no bounds, and he wants to break all of the rules with his film. That annoys the heck out of his leading lady, Jean Seberg (Zoey Deutch), but his other star, Jean-Paul Belmondo (Aubry Dullin), is more willing to go along with it. There are comedic moments interspersed with drama, but this is a love letter to an era that many modern viewers simply don’t know much about.
Nouvelle Vague is streaming on Netflix.
1. ‘The Iron Claw’ (2023)
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 89 percent
Professional wrestling is scripted entertainment, but you couldn’t say that to the fans in Texas during the 1980s. The Von Erich family was incredibly popular in the Lone Star State, and they drew large crowds on a weekly basis. Jack “Fritz” Von Erich (Holt McCallany) was a former wrestler himself, and he had a gift for promotion that’s on full display in The Iron Claw.
Adele Was ‘Blown Away’ by Zac Efron’s Performance in ‘The Iron Claw’
Kevin Von Erich (Zac Efron), Kerry Von Erich (Jeremy Allen White), David Von Erich (Harris Dickinson) and Mike Von Erich (Stanley Simons) followed the path laid out by their legendary father. In front of an audience, the Von Erichs were like real-life superheroes. Beyond the scenes, the brothers were rocked by a series of tragic events that came to define their legacy. This is largely a true story, and it goes to some heartbreaking places.
The Iron Claw will stream on Prime Video on November 19.
