Waterville and Winslow firefighters doused a fire at an apartment building on Water Street Friday evening.
Waterville crews were called to 6 Water St. at about 6:30 p.m. and arrived to find fire alarms sounding and residents evacuating. Water was running between floors at the northwest corner of the building, and smoke was visible in a stairwell, according to the Waterville Fire Department.
A second alarm was struck, with Winslow firefighters responding. Crews found a smoldering fire in a fifth-floor construction area that had been largely contained by the building’s sprinkler system.
Residents had to be relocated because of water damage and disabled fire protection systems, officials said. Only the third floor is currently occupied in the Lockwood Mill apartment renovation.
No injuries were reported.
The Waterville Housing Authority provided transportation and temporary lodging at a nearby hotel for all residents.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
The Waterville Fire Department reminded residents and business owners of the importance of maintaining fire alarms and sprinkler systems.
