French police shot and wounded a man carrying a knife at a train station in Paris, the city’s prosecutor’s office has said.
The man was shot in the legs and then inflicted knife wounds on himself, according to the prosecutor’s office. The incident took place at Montparnasse station in the French capital, the city’s prosecutor officer said in a statement.
The man was “known for domestic violence”, the statement added.
A police source told Reuters the man had threatened his wife and children in a Paris suburb before taking a train destined for Montparnasse, where police were waiting for him.
When officers confronted him, he threatened to kill himself and was then shot, the source added.
The prosecutor’s office said at least one gunshot was heard.
A witness told Reuters they heard several shots.
A Reuters photographer at the station said the police intervention caused a crowd surge through the concourse.

Police evacuated the station, which serves suburban commuter routes as well as high-speed trains to the country’s west and southwest.

Another witness told BFM TV he heard a loud bang before panic broke out.
“It took me two or three seconds to realise what was happening. People started saying: ‘We have to get out of here, we have to leave quickly,’ so that got my heart racing and I got up and ran,” the witness said.
