What would happen to our U.S. political system if Congress and the president could no longer use our children’s and grandchildren’s credit card to fund government, in other words increase taxes to pay for our spending or cut spending instead of passing the bill to our next generations?
The federal government has a checking account, just like most households do, with money coming in and going out. Unlike household checking accounts, the government account has far more going out than coming in. With a household account checks would start bouncing and the household would probably be in serious legal trouble and immediately have their checking account, along with their debit card, cancelled.
Why are American voters not at all concerned with letting their children and grandchildren pay a terrible price in order to have the government we seemingly want today? That question is rhetorical as I already know the answer.
Americans are addicted to “something for nothing,” even knowing there is no such thing. The politicians we re-elect every two years know that and masterfully use the checking account overdraft feature to keep their rock star-like jobs and avoid any tough decisions real leaders should make.
