Broadway in Bangor will be closed at the Interstate 95 overpass for two nights next week.
That will allow crews to dig trenches to lay utility lines for new signals for the I-95 southbound on- and offramps.
Broadway will be closed to all traffic there from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Nov. 17 and 18. Flaggers will help pedestrians navigate the worksite, according to the Maine Department of Transportation.
Drivers should follow posted detour signs, the department said Wednesday morning.
It’s the latest step toward the eventual replacement of the aging bridge carrying I-95 traffic over Broadway. The 152-foot steel girder bridge, built in 1960, is crossed about 50,000 times daily and is in “poor condition,” transportation officials have told the Bangor Daily News. The Maine Department of Transportation expects to complete that work by late next year.
Earlier this month, crews reached a major milestone in this project, demolishing the old southbound bridge. During the next stage, crews will build a new southbound bridge, after which the temporary bridge will be removed.
The project will cost $30.6 million, about $9.3 million of which is covered by a federal grant.
In recent years other I-95 bridges in Bangor have been replaced, including the Ohio Street bridge in 2020 and the Union Street bridge in 2016.
