The coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge covers nearly 1.6 million acres of irreplaceable wilderness that consists of a variety of species; from migratory birds to caribou, and of course polar bears. However, this land is currently being auctioned off in order to implement oil and gas drilling under the current Trump administration.
While oil drilling has already been taking place there for some time, the Congressional Review Act is being used to fast-track new drilling leases. This would have enormous effects on climate change, habitat loss, and the disruption of nesting of migratory bird species. Not only that, but the ANWR also serves as the cultural homeland of the Gwich’in Nation, and it should remain protected.
I am disappointed in those who can’t see the importance of protecting this precious refuge. As someone who has recently moved to Maine, I have come to find a deeper and more meaningful connection to nature. This is why I am concerned about the use of the Congressional Review Act for this purpose, as both a young adult and an environmental science student. These bills being introduced directly affect me not only now, but for years to come.
I urge you to call your representatives now, and implore them to vote “no” on H.J. Res. 131.
