Bangor-area soccer teams will play for a state title in all five classes when the high school season wraps up Saturday.
The Bangor Rams girls team will work to defend their Class A title against Scarborough after downing Camden Hills 4-1 in the North regional championship Tuesday night. The Rams are hoping for an exact repeat of last year’s championship season, when they beat Camden for the regional crown and then beat Scarborough 3-1 for the state title.
Bangor and Scarborough play this year’s title game at 11 a.m. Saturday at Messalonskee High School in Oakland.
In Class B girls, the undefeated Hermon Hawks are chasing a long-elusive state championship after winning the North region six of the previous 11 years under MJ Ball but coming up one game short each time. The earned their seventh regional title Thursday night with a 5-0 win over Skowhegan, and now face Cape Elizabeth in the state championship at 11 a.m. Saturday at Edward Little High School in Auburn.
“Our goal at the very beginning of the year was to get back to states,” Hermon coach MJ Ball said after the regional win.
Hermon senior Madison Stewart is hoping this can finally be the year that the Hawks bring home that gold ball.
“We just really, really want it,” Stewart said Thursday night.
The Orono boys squad survived two overtimes and two rounds of penalty kicks to win the Class C North title on Tuesday night, and now have a chance to win the state championship on Saturday against returning champs Hall-Dale. That game will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Cony High School in Augusta.
Orono has yet to lose a contest this season, providing late-game heroics in several overtime wins during the 2025 campaign.
In Class D girls, the Penobscot Valley Howlers of Howland are on the hunt for a third-straight state championship after beating Central Aroostook 2-0 in the semifinals. The talented Howler program is taking on Ashland at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hermon High School.
The Bangor Christian girls are providing even more local representation in the 8-person state final, as the Patriots take on Wisdom at 11 a.m. Saturday at Brewer High School. The Patriots have won all 17 games they’ve played so far this season, and Wisdom is 15-2 with its only two losses coming against Bangor Christian.
Maine Soccer Coaches Association President Michael Jeffrey, who was recently inducted into the Brewer Athletic Hall of Fame, said the Bangor area has been doing well when it comes to producing quality soccer players.
“It’s a good time for the fans, but it’s also a wonderful time for neutrals like me,” Jeffries said Friday. “I don’t have to go far to see good soccer.”
