A home registered to Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra burnt to the ground in a massive, early morning fire, according to authorities.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue were called to a fire at approximately 4:30 a.m. on Thursday, November 6, Battalion Chief Victoria Byrd said during a brief press conference.
Over 20 units responded to the blaze, which was described as “tall as the trees.”
“Our units came in, did an excellent job,” Byrd said. “We used multiple aerial apparatuses, fire engines and rescues to help combat this incident. Due to the privacy wall and a lot of the tree cover, it was very difficult to access with only one point of entry.”

Byrd said the fire was eventually extinguished as members of fire and rescue “did the best job they could.”
Aerial footage from above the home showed nearly the entire property destroyed.
Video captured by Local 10 News showed Spoelstra, 55, outside of the home after the blaze. The outlet described Spoelstra as “distraught.”
Heat assistant coach Chris Quinn was also seen in the footage.
Spoelstra and the Heat played in Denver against the Nuggets on Wednesday, November 5. The team’s charter flight did not land back in Miami until 5:11 a.m. on Thursday, according to the Associated Press.
The Heat are scheduled to play at home against the Charlotte Hornets on Friday, November 7.
A neighbor told Local 10 News reporter that Spoelstra’s home had been under renovation for at least a year. The neighbor believed the renovations may have recently been completed, as Spoelstra reportedly held a large party in his backyard not long ago.
No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire remains unknown.
According to the Miami Herald, firefighters battled the blaze for more than four hours.

Spoelstra purchased the 5,700 square-foot home, which had five bedrooms and 3 ½ bathrooms, in December 2023.
Spoelstra and his ex-wife, Nikki Spoelstra, finalized their divorce in November 2023 after seven years of marriage. The couple shares three children: sons Santiago, 6, and Dante, 4, and daughter Ruby, 2.
It is not clear if any of the Spoelstras’ children were at home at the time of the fire, but they were not seen outside the home with their father.
Erik has been the head coach of the Heat since 2008, winning back-to-back NBA titles with the team in 2012 and 2013. He was also an assistant coach on the 2024 United States men’s basketball team that won Olympic gold in Paris.
