Why ‘NSync’s Plans for a Movie Have Stalled — Like Their Reunion Tour

‘NSync had been in talks to make a movie about their official story as a boy band, but much like their reunion tour, it is now dead in the water, a source exclusively tells Us Weekly.

The conversations began in 2023 after Justin Timberlake, JC Chasez, Lance Bass, Joey Fatone and Chris Kirkpatrick released their first song together in two decades, “Better Place” from the Trolls Band Together soundtrack, which the insider notes “got a lot of interest” and “spurred” the idea.

“This film/documentary project has been in the works since then and has had many iterations (meaning a scripted film and a behind-the-scenes-style documentary featuring the band),” the source tells Us. “As of now, nothing is proceeding.”

Timberlake’s participation has been one point of contention, according to the insider.

Joey Fatone Says ‘NSync Needs to Talk Before Their Potential Reunion

“He wants certain elements of control,” the source explains. “Let’s say Justin wants to be executive producer while the other four are producers. That sort of thing. [It’s] an element of control and power that they could not agree on.”

The insider shares that ‘NSync was “hopeful” at one point that the movie “would be released timed to the band’s 30th anniversary” in October, which ultimately “came and went” without any news.

Us Weekly has reached out to reps for Timberlake, Chasez, Bass, Fatone and Kirkpatrick for comment.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news of a potential ‘NSync biopic in January, but even then, things seemed murky at best. The magazine reported that Fast & Furious producer Neal H. Moritz had been shopping the film to studios and had met with all five members to seek their participation.

At the time, the movie had reached the screenwriting stage with Timberlake nearing a deal to serve as an executive producer, according to The Hollywood Reporter. However, there were reportedly issues getting the whole band to sign off on a biopic, in part because they each have different managers.

The outlet also noted that the timing did not feel right for ‘NSync because they did not have coinciding concerts scheduled at the time.

The latest update comes after Us exclusively reported in September that the Grammy-nominated group had been closer than ever to getting back together for a stadium tour, but they were forced to put their plans on hold indefinitely due to Timberlake’s solo Forget Tomorrow World Tour and subsequent Lyme disease diagnosis.

An insider shared at the time that Chasez, 49, Bass, 46, Fatone, 48, and Kirkpatrick, 54, “don’t want to” hit the road without Timberlake, 44, who wrote via Instagram in July that he “honestly [doesn’t] know what [his] future is onstage” as he prioritizes his “relentlessly debilitating” health battle.

‘NSync, whose hit songs included “Tearin’ Up My Heart,” “Bye Bye Bye” and “It’s Gonna Be Me,” has not toured as a quintet since 2002 but has reunited several times over the years, including at the 2013 and 2023 MTV Video Music Awards. They also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2018.
