The southbound interstate bridge over Broadway in Bangor has been demolished.
The Maine Department of Transportation on Wednesday morning called the demolition a “key milestone” in improving safety on Interstate 95 in the Queen City.
That demolition work began in October.
It’s the latest step toward the eventual replacement of the aging bridge carrying I-95 traffic over Broadway. The 152-foot steel girder bridge, built in 1960, is crossed about 50,000 times daily and is in “poor condition,” transportation officials have told the Bangor Daily News. The Maine Department of Transportation expects to complete that work by late next year.
During the next stage, crews will build a new southbound bridge, after which the temporary bridge will be removed.
The project will cost $30.6 million, about $9.3 million of which is covered by a federal grant.
In recent years other I-95 bridges in Bangor have been replaced, including the Ohio Street bridge in 2020 and the Union Street bridge in 2016.
