Brian Kresge’s words in a weekend Bangor Daily News column allude to an unspoken issue. He criticizes U.S. Senate hopeful Graham Platner on the basis of the candidate connecting money sent to Israel and Maine’s working class financial woes.
If there are people in Israel who need our help, we should go to their aid. But what kind of help is Israel asking for? What is this money we’ve been sending to Israel being spent for? Not food or clothing, not medicine. No, the money is for military equipment, used to destroy their neighbor, Gaza.
The destruction of Gaza has been a festering wound that may bring the downfall of our government. I believe this is the hidden reason Donald Trump got elected as president. Had Kamala Harris met with Gaza protesters, she might be our president right now.
Americans have witnessed Gaza getting ravaged, its people starved and killed by bombs largely paid for by us and many don’t like it. Israel is not the U.S. We cannot vote out Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu or strategize to get him out of power. He acts within the authority given to him by the people of Israel and he has blood on his hands.
I believe protests going on around the country and the popularity of candidates like Platner, who have made it a theme in their campaigns to stop Israel from attacking the people of Gaza, belies no hidden agenda against Jews or Israel, but rather a defense of the people of Gaza.
