A rainy storm system that will bring high winds to central and northern Maine on Friday may disrupt some Halloween plans.
According to National Weather Service forecasters, much of the central highlands and some midcoast communities could see more than 2 inches of rain Friday night. Wind gusts could also reach up to 30 miles per hour at times.
The influx of rain could also prompt flash flooding, as Maine continues to experience drought conditions and leaves that have fallen are likely to block drainage systems. Forecasters ask Mainers to be prepared for damage to trees as well as the storm system moves through the state Friday.
Off the coast of Maine, waves could reach up to 8 feet in height due to wind gusts.
Overnight lows over the next few days will drop to the mid 30s, with daytime temperatures across the state reaching the high 40s and mid 50s over the next few days.
Rainy conditions are expected to persist throughout the weekend, with intermittent showers across the state on Saturday.
Rainfall over the weekend could help to alleviate drought conditions and reduce the fire danger, but won’t completely eliminate the drought that has spread across Maine. It will take 10 to 15 inches of slow, steady rain to do that before the ground freezes, according to state officials.
