Food stamp funding is set to be cut off on Saturday if the federal government shutdown continues, leaving 170,000 Mainers without the benefits that help pay for groceries.

According to the Trump administration, funding will run out Friday for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program that is relied upon by 42 million Americans.

The administration has rejected using more than $5 billion in contingency funds to keep SNAP flowing into November, and on Tuesday Maine joined a multi-state lawsuit seeking to force the administration to use its reserves.

An unexpected end to the shutdown this week would resolve the SNAP problem, or alternative funding could be offered through a short-term state fund.

As the weekend deadline approaches, Mainers are making preparations to feed their hungry neighbors, in many cases shining a light on existing food insecurity in the state.

Maine has 260 established food assistance programs, including food pantries, soup kitchens and other services, according to a list maintained by the state Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Conservation, listed here by town:
