Last year, Netflix scored a breakout hit with Nobody Wants This, a romantic comedy/drama starring Kristen Bell and Adam Brody.
Bell plays relationship podcaster Joanne Williams, while Brody portrays Noah Roklov, a rabbi who is coming out of a breakup.
Their relationship struck such a powerful chord with audiences that Netflix put season 2 into a fast turnaround, and it’s premiering later this month.

Kristen Bell and Adam Brody Are Very Appealing Leads
Could anyone else have played Joanne or Noah in this series? Sure, but it probably wouldn’t have worked as well without Bell and Brody. Their romantic chemistry is a lot of fun to watch, but their comedic timing together is even better. Their characters may not easily fit into their respective personal lives, but they clearly play off each other well.
Nobody Wants This does have its dramatic moments, but it largely embraces a lighter tone that more closely resembles a rom-com than a traditional TV show. The key difference is that movie rom-coms are over in about two hours, while the show has to keep its momentum going for years and years. If Nobody Wants This does pull off a lengthy run on Netflix, it will largely be due to the personal appeal of both Bell and Brody. They may be playing characters, but they feel real together.
‘Nobody Wants This’ Makes the Audience Care About the Characters
Since this show does have an ensemble cast, we should give Justine Lupe and Timothy Simons a shout-out for their portrayals of Joanne’s sister, Morgan Williams, and Noah’s brother, Sasha Roklov, respectively. They’re standouts among the supporting cast. But the primary reason people have flocked to Nobody Wants This is because it’s done a terrific job of portraying Joanne and Noah as a relatable couple with some potentially very big roadblocks ahead of them.
Which ‘Nobody Wants This’ Stars Are — and Aren’t — Returning for Season 2
The scene in the video above provides a good example of this, as Joanne confesses to Noah about the things in their relationship that scare her. She’s opening up emotionally, even though she can’t initially bring herself to look at Noah while she shares her deepest fears. The way he responds says everything about him, and it also creates an emotional investment with the audience. We care about these two people and just want to see them be happy together. Sometimes, that seems like a lot to ask. But at least in fiction, the writers can create their own ending.
Season 2 Adds Depth to the Relationship Drama
It’s not a huge spoiler to say that Noah and Joanne are still together when season 2 begins. It would have been a pretty huge downer if season 1 had ended on a breakup. As seen in the trailer above, Noah and Joanne are committed to making their relationship transform into a long-lasting love. Unfortunately for the pair, big questions lie ahead that neither of them is sure how to answer.
Joanne has been an avowed agnostic since the beginning of the show, and Noah’s family and professional circle aren’t thrilled that he’s dating a non-Jewish woman. Her lack of religion may prevent him from ever becoming a head rabbi as well. Does that mean Joanne should convert to Judaism just to make Noah happy? Or should she put her own desires and beliefs first? There aren’t easy resolutions for the pair as their honeymoon period comes to an end. But we’re looking forward to seeing how they navigate the relationship challenges ahead.
