Having voted in Maine’s elections for over a decade, I’m aware of the obvious lack of providing positive identification to be able to cast a vote. I believe the act of proving one’s identity has been an overlooked step in the sacred ceremonial process of voting in Maine.

I am appalled to have heard, from the secretary of state, that there probably are ineligible voters on the voter rolls in Maine presently. Every vote matters, and only legal votes should count.

Efficiency over integrity is not the way to view our most important opportunity to ensure our rights. I think our voting system is under attack and being weakened by our apathetic state government.

We the people have spoken up. This initiative is of the people, by the people and for the people. I believe voting “yes” for voter ID will make our votes more secure.

Why should we make it easier for others to cheat in our elections by weakening our voting process? We can follow the 36 other states that have voter ID laws in place. I believe we need this verification to secure our elections. I urge all Mainers to vote “yes” on Question 1.

Adam Gaal
