Meghan Markle opened up about the dinner ritual she follows with her and Prince Harry’s children, Archie and Lilibet, during a bookstore event this week.
“It’s, essentially, at the end of the day where you can say, ‘Here’s my rose, here’s the best part of my day, and here’s my thorn.’ Because every day is not going to be perfect — no day is. But what are the things that are your highlights and also the things that maybe didn’t feel so good, they hurt a little bit,” Meghan, 44, explained on Wednesday, October 22. “And, especially with young children, it’s a great opener for, you know, when you get to that stage where your kids just give you a yes or no answer and you go, ‘OK, what’s your rose and thorn?’ And you really can start to peel back the layers and find ways to connect.”
For Wednesday’s event, Meghan joined her Northwestern University sorority sister Courtney Adamo at Godmothers in Summerland, California, for a discussion about hosting, parenting and beyond, which live-streamed on Substack and Instagram.
The event, titled “Compare Notes on Creating a Home That’s Filled With Joy,” was moderated by the store’s cofounder, Victoria Jackson, and featured Courtney and her husband Matthew Adamo’s new book, The Family Home. (The Adamos share five children, aged 8 to 20.)
Every Time Meghan Markle References Harry and Kids in Netflix’s ‘With Love’
Meghan continued to say that 4-year-old Lilibet, in particular, shares some humorous roses and thorns.
“I was joking,” Meghan recalled. “You know, our daughter, she’s 4, and she’s a very strong personality, and she’s incredible. And now she’s in this moment of, I said, ‘OK, Lily, it’s your turn. What’s your rose and your thorn.’ She goes, ‘My day was just a blast.’”
Meghan — who married Harry, 41, in May 2018 and welcomed Archie, 6, and Lilibet in May 2019 and June 2021, respectively — also shared another ritual she follows at home: the use of a “healing blanket.”

The As Ever founder said that, whenever one of her kids isn’t feeling well, they reach for the blanket — a gift from Jackson — to comfort them.
She also makes sure to start each day with music.
“First thing I do when I wake up in the morning is turn the music on in the house,” Meghan shared.
She even travels with a portable speaker so she can curate her playlist, and sets a home-y vibe with a scented candle.
“I always travel with a candle,” she admitted. “I am so conscious and sensitive to fragrance and I associate that with home.”
Meghan Markle Gives Rare Glimpse at Archie and Lili — And They’re So Big!
Meghan’s lifestyle tips and tricks have been the topic of much discussion as of late following the first two seasons of her Netflix series, With Love, Meghan. On it, she shares food and drink recipes as well as crafting ideas, such as flower arranging, soap design and candlemaking.
“The series is about doing what you can do, and doing it with love,” Meghan told People in March.
Of her children, she said that she hopes they feel “really proud that they were part of the beginning of this [lifestyle brand] with me.”
“Being able to have my own little girl, as I’ve spent so much of my life championing the rights of girls and women, and to be able to see this as a multigenerational story — Archie is of course included in that, my husband is of course included in that — but I love the heritage feeling of it and knowing this is something that I can create in front of my daughter and teach her what it’s like to be a working mom,” she said. “This is something that hopefully can be part of her legacy too.”
