Shots have been fired outside Serbia’s parliament building, leaving one person injured, according to local reports.

Footage on social media also showed a fire inside a tent near the parliament building, in the capital, Belgrade.

Armed security were seen approaching the tent, one of several put up by supporters of President Aleksander Vucic during anti-government protests.

Shots were then fired before a blaze broke out.

It is not yet clear who fired the shots or how the fire started.

Local reports said one person, a 57-year-old man, was wounded by a gunshot and is in a stable condition. One man has been detained.

A video shared on X showed a man lying on the ground with his hands behind his back, surrounded by officers.

Mr Vucic described the incident as a “terrorist attack”.

The incident came ahead of a 1 November rally marking the first anniversary of a train station canopy collapse that triggered huge youth-led protests against Mr Vucic – who has been the country’s president since 2017.

The rally is planned in the city of Novi Sad, located to the northwest of Belgrade, where the incident took place. A total of 16 people died in the collapse, which was blamed on corruption-based negligence.

Serbia’s Gen Z protesters have been demanding Mr Vucic, a populist who has been accused by his opponents of cracking down on free press and civil liberties, schedule an early parliamentary election.

He has so far refused the demands.
