SCARBOROUGH — CWS Architecture + Interior Design is announcing the upcoming retirement of its longtime President Benedict B. Walter, who will step down in March 2026 after 34 years with the firm and 40 years in the architecture industry.

Since founding CWS Architecture + Interior Design, Walter has played a pivotal role in shaping the firm’s growth, strengthening client relationships and leading innovative projects that have left a lasting impact on the greater Portland community. Under his leadership, the firm has expanded its expertise, built a reputation for excellence, and remained dedicated to delivering thoughtful, high-quality design solutions.

“This firm has been my home for well over three decades, and I am incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished together,” said Walter. “The success of CWS has always been about the strength of our team, our relationships and our shared commitment to designing with purpose. While I may be stepping back, I know the firm is in excellent hands and will continue to thrive well into the future.”

Walter’s retirement marks a transition, but CWS Architecture + Interior Design remains as strong as ever. The firm will continue to be comprised of CWS’s four principals including Co-Presidents George Lavigne, AIA and Lynn Pepin, MCID, LEED ID+C, COEE, alongside Vice Presidents Guy Labrecque, AIA and Rebecca Bagley, AIA who are fully prepared to carry the firm forward with the same dedication to design excellence and client service. The firm remains committed to its guiding core values and will continue to serve its clients with the same passion and expertise that have defined its success.

“Our foundation is solid, and our future is bright,” said Lavigne. “We are incredibly grateful for Ben’s leadership and vision, which have positioned us for continued success. We look forward to building on that legacy while embracing new opportunities ahead.”

Lavigne has been with the firm since 1996 and was named principal in 2013.

“Ben’s commitment to collaboration and to building meaningful relationships has shaped not only the firm but also each of us as professionals,” said Pepin. “As we look to the future, we are excited to carry forward his vision while continuing to nurture the partnerships and values that define who we are.”

Pepin has been with the firm since 2015 and was named principal in 2019.

As part of this transition, CWS Architecture + Interior Design will be celebrating Walter’s contributions with tributes honoring his lasting impact.
