Two decades ago, HBO and Showtime were the primary destinations for mature original series. Now, both are lending shows out to Netflix.
While HBO has yet to license The Sopranos to stream on Netflix, Showtime has sent one of its signature comedies, Nurse Jackie.
It’s already in the top 10, and on top of Watch With Us‘ list of the three underrated Netflix shows I can’t wait to watch this weekend.

‘Nurse Jackie’ (2009 – 2015)
For her follow-up to The Sopranos, Edie Falco starred in Nurse Jackie as the title character, Jackie Peyton. Jackie is a very capable nurse who is married to Kevin Peyton (Dominic Fumusa) and shares two daughters with him. On the outside, she seems to have the perfect life. But in reality, Jackie is hopelessly addicted to drugs as a way to cope with her overwhelming responsibilities.
Most of Jackie’s coworkers don’t realize she’s an addict, and she works hard to keep it that way. She even has an affair with the hospital pharmacist, Eddie (Paul Schulze), to pump him for drugs. Jackie is skilled at juggling all of the contradictions she has to live with, but too blind to see that she can’t keep it up forever. Sooner or later, her life is going to come crashing down around her.

‘Splinter Cell: Deathwatch’ (2025)
If you’ve never played the Splinter Cell video games, all you really need to know about Splinter Cell: Deathwatch going in is that Sam Fisher (Liev Schreiber) was once one of the most-renowned covert operatives of the United States government. Now, he’s an old man enjoying his retirement. But in the spy game, no one stays retired forever.

Sam is drawn back into action when a young operative, Zinnia McKenna (Kirby Howell-Baptiste), calls for help and reveals that her organization is compromised. That makes it Sam’s fight whether he wants it or not. He also has to deal with the return of Diana Shetland (Kiff VandenHeuvel), the daughter of one of Sam’s friends, whom he had to murder when he went rogue. In the present, Diana is the CEA of a military contractor and Sam’s newest enemy.

‘Alice in Borderland’ (2020 – Present)
The Japanese thriller series Alice in Borderland was doing Squid Game years before that show debuted on Netflix. Kento Yamazaki stars as Ryōhei Arisu, a young man whose love for video games and lack of direction have left him with limited prospects in life. But those same slacker tendencies may save Arisu’s life when he’s transported to the Borderlands, a replica of Tokyo.
The Borderlands are pretty unforgiving, and the people who are stuck there face a terrible choice. They can either play dangerous games to extend their “visas” for the city, or they can risk being murdered by lasers from above if they refuse. That’s not much of a choice, but Arisu doesn’t have any other options.
