Did you realize that if Question 1 passes, your absentee ballot might be disqualified because you folded it wrong?
Buried in the 12 pages of the legislation accompanying the referendum, it states that the ballot must be ”folded in a manner that the stub on it and the indorsement and facsimile signature of the registrar on the back of it are visible.” This suggests that election clerks would not be allowed to process improperly folded ballots, and might have to throw those ballots out.
Another phrase in the 12-page document creates a conundrum. The referendum would require “bipartisan” teams to check and collect absentee ballots from ballot boxes — changing the number of election officials needed from one to at least two. But it left unchanged the phrase regarding who gets to “possess the key.” The key. One key. With no explanation how two or more election officials will be able to “possess the key.”
These are the kinds of flaws that keep lawyers employed and taxpayers footing the bill.
So, Question 1 is not only an attack on absentee voting rights, it is a badly worded attack on absentee voting rights. Yet another reason to vote “no” on Question 1.
