Meghan McCain is offering a health update on her mom, Cindy McCain, who suffered “a mild stroke” earlier this month.
“I didn’t talk about it on my social media because my brothers and my family and I were trying to, you know, figure out what was going on,” Meghan, 40, explained during the Tuesday, October 14, episode of her “Citizen McCain” podcast. “She lives in Rome.”
Meghan told listeners that Cindy, 71, has since “flown back to Arizona” for her recovery, which is going “very well.” Meghan confirmed that her mother is still hospitalized — but will be discharged shortly.
“She is cognitively completely fine. Can talk just normal, like she always has. [She’s] texting, and I’ve talked to her many times and to my family,” Meghan continued. “But she has some physical things that have happened as a result of the stroke.”
Celebrity Health Scares Through the Years
She continued, “All things considered, it is mild, as the doctor said, and not intense, but still scary nonetheless. But she is OK. Thank you all for asking.”
News broke on Thursday, October 9, that Cindy suffered a stroke while in Italy with the U.N. World Food Program.
“I want to thank the medical staff in Italy for the excellent treatment I received,” Cindy shared in a statement at the time. “My recovery is progressing well thanks to their outstanding care. I look forward to continuing my recuperation at home in Arizona with my family.”
The McCain family didn’t share any further information about Cindy on social media following the health scare. They were “all trying to figure out exactly where we landed in this,” Meghan explained on Tuesday’s podcast episode.
“She will be fine. I am glad that she is in Arizona with my family,” she continued. “For those of you asking why I’m not in Arizona with my family, I am seven months pregnant. I am not allowed to fly that far yet.”
Meghan noted that she is going to the doctor for “clearance” to get on an airplane.
“The good thing about having six brothers and sisters is there’s a lot of family members, all hands on deck, taking care of my mom right now,” she concluded.
Meghan McCain and Ben Domenech’s Relationship Timeline
Meghan is the eldest child of Cindy and the late former Vice President John McCain, who also share Jack, 39, Jimmy, 37, and adopted daughter Bridget, 34. (John was previously married to Carol McCain, with whom he shares daughter Sidney, 59. He also adopted Carol’s two sons, Doug, 66, and Andrew, 63, from a previous relationship.)
Meghan, meanwhile, announced in June that she was pregnant and expecting her third child, a boy, with husband Ben Domenech. The couple have been married since 2017 and previously suffered a miscarriage.
“I hope you don’t mind. I wanted to let you in on something that’s private that I haven’t talked about publicly yet,” she shared on the “Citizen McCain” podcast at the time. “I have two little girls. They are almost 5 and almost 3. And I just am entering my second trimester, I’m pregnant with my third.”
Meghan noted that it was “a weird way to announce” her pregnancy.
“I’m very nervous about having a boy,” she added. “And I’m very nervous about having three children. Very.”
