A man died early Tuesday morning in a house fire in Harpswell.
The fire broke out about 4:28 a.m. at the Harpswell Neck Road home, according to Shannon Moss, a spokesperson for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
While battling the blaze, firefighters found 78-year-old Hugh MacFarlane inside the two-story home. They brought him outside, but MacFarlane died at the scene, Moss said.
The Maine medical examiner’s office in Augusta will determine MacFarlane’s cause and manner of death.
The fire caused significant damage to the home. It remains under investigation.
Correction: An earlier version of this story used an incorrect spelling of Hugh MacFarlane’s last name.
