Ballot Question 1 seeks to severely limit the use of absentee ballots in Maine. I have voted mostly using absentee ballots for the past 30 years. I worked as a perfusionist (operating the heart-lung machine) in the operating room. I was rarely able to vote in person on election day due to my work schedule. Absentee voting was my only option to exercise my civic duty.
Limiting the use of absentee ballots is just one way of curtailing our voting rights. I believe this referendum is out and out voter suppression.
Maine has high voter turnout. Maine has effective systems in place to prevent voter fraud.
No eligible voter in Maine should have their access to absentee ballots restricted. I urge all Maine citizens to vote “no” on Question 1, whether in person or by absentee ballot.
