Did ‘DMV’ Just Feature a Nod to Tim Meadows’ Role on ‘Mean Girls’?

CBS’ new sitcom DMV just found a creative way to nod at Tim Meadows‘ scene-stealing Mean Girls role.

During the series premiere on Monday, October 13, Meadows, 64, was introduced as Gregg, who works at the DMV office. Gregg sat down with auditors looking to see whether his location would have to be shut down — and Meadows’ character had some thoughts.

“Don’t you think it is ironic that the city is spending all this money on you two to figure out what is wrong with the DMV when everyone knows what is wrong is we don’t have enough money,” Gregg said.

The auditor tried to change the subject. “It says here that you used to teach high school English. Tell us about that,” she asked, to which Gregg replied, “Nah.”

How the ‘Mean Girls’ Musical Film Cast Compares to OG Movie Counterparts

DMV is a workplace comedy set in the dreaded DMV office, which centers on quirky minimum-wage employees who make the best of dealing with annoyed customers while finding solace in each other’s company.

In addition to Meadows, DMV stars Harriet Dyer, Molly Kearney, Alex Tarrant, Tony Cavalero and Gigi Zumbado. CBS’ Monday nights will be rounded out with season 2 of Morris Chestnut’s Watson and the return of FBI.

Meadows’ character working at a high school sounds familiar to fans of Mean Girls, who is known for his role as Principal Duvall in 2004’s Mean Girls film. He reprised the role in Mean Girls 2 and in the film’s 2024 musical adaptation, which costarred Angourie Rice, Reneé Rapp, Auliʻi Cravalho, Jaquel Spivey, Avantika, Bebe Wood, Christopher Briney, Jenna Fischer and Busy Philipps.

Tina Fey, who played Meadows’ love interest in Mean Girls, previously shared the stipulation that they both had about reprising their roles in the new movie.

“I am reprising my role as Ms. Norbury because we thought, well, teachers work for a long time. So it might make sense if Tim and I did it,” Fey, 55, told People in 2024. “So I called Tim and I was like, ‘Will you do it? I’ll do it if you do it.’ And we said, ‘Yes, as long as we don’t have to sing.’”

‘Mean Girls’ Cast: Where Are They Now? Lindsay Lohan and More

Fey was thrilled to work with Meadows again, adding, “It was fun. It’s been nice to see Tim. One of us has aged — the other one of us is Tim Meadows! But it’s been really nice to get to work with Tim again.”

Mean Girls originally premiered in 2004 and starred Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Lacey Chabert, Amanda Seyfried, Lizzy Caplan, Daniel Franzese, Jonathan Bennett, Amy Poehler and Fey.

The film explored topics such as high school social cliques and school bullying through the lens of Cady (Lohan), who navigates the social hierarchy in a high school after years of homeschooling.

Fey went on to adapt the cult classic into a stage musical. The Broadway musical took the theater world by storm in 2018 and even featured familiar faces including Reneé Rapp, who went on to join the upcoming Mean Girls musical movie.

DMV airs on CBS Mondays at 8:30 p.m. ET. New episodes stream the next day on Paramount+.
