‘Watson’ Stars Hint ‘Nobody Is Safe’ When Season 2 Begins: ‘Life or Death’

CBS fans looking forward to season 2 of Watson should expect higher stakes — and the possibility of more deaths.

During an exclusive interview with Us Weekly, costars Morris Chestnut and Rochelle Aytes teased whether viewers should be worried about the fates of their favorite characters.

“I will say that in this world of Watson, nobody is safe,” Chestnut, 56, noted ahead of the Monday, October 13, premiere. “We’re dealing with a case by case basis with life or death situations. None of the cast is immune from that.”

As viewers will remember, Watson (Chestnut) and the rest of his team had a difficult choice to make in the season 1 finale between Stephens and Adams (Peter Mark Kendall). They opted to perform a life-saving brain surgery on Stephens while still finding a way to keep Adams from dying.

‘Watson’ Season 1 Ending: How Did [Spoiler] Die? What’s the Next Mystery?

Season 2 will remain committed to telling stories that push boundaries.

“It is a procedural show. We have a procedural show with the serialized spine. So ultimately, we will have a case of the week each week that we’re presented with,” Chestnut shared. “We have to diagnose and then solve them. But there are also going to be a lot of surprises and a lot of twists and turns that the audience may not expect.”

Chestnut was thrilled about Watson expanding its storytelling, saying, “You learn more about the characters on the show. We spent so much time as Watson was dealing with Moriarty and the loss of Sherlock Holmes that it was pretty much dominating.”

He continued: “This year, we get more into the characters. We’re going so much more without Moriarty there. We’re going so much more into character development.”

Based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle‘s Sherlock Holmes stories, Watson takes place six months after Moriarty (Randall Park) kills the legendary detective. Watson came to terms with the loss of his best friend and partner by resuming his medical career as the head of a clinic dedicated to treating rare disorders.

Season 1 focused on Watson’s rivalry with Moriarty, but the next installment is expected to involve Sherlock Holmes (Robert Carlyle) — despite his offscreen death prior to the events of the show. Season 2 will feature more fun additions, including more of a focus on Mary (Aytes) following her split from Watson.

Reliving TV’s Most Shocking Deaths

“I didn’t specifically request it, but I thought about it and it’s come to fruition. I wanted to be more of a part of the team and I wanted to operate more,” Aytes, 49, teased to Us. “Both of those have come true. Mary is putting on those scrubs and she is saving some lives this season.”

Chestnut promised more surprises as the show continues to unfold.

“One of the things that I love about the show and the second season is that Watson was previously just doing his thing and Mary is boss. He was just coming to her in the 12th hour for help getting something to happen,” he recalled. “But now she comes right in. She helps us from the very beginning with solving cases and having an understanding of things. So I love that.”

Watson airs on CBS Mondays at 10 p.m. ET. New episodes stream the next day on Paramount+.
