Owen Corrigan hasn’t had much trouble finding the back of the net for the Caribou Vikings this season.
The senior soccer star has already broken his Aroostook County school’s single season goal-scoring record with a couple of games left to play.
The overpowering striker notched seven goals in Monday’s 13-1 win over Old Town and stretched his season tally to 42, according to his coach.
“Owen’s had a great season. He’s putting a lot of goals in for us,” said Caribou head coach Evan Richards. “We have a lot of great players, and they all work well together. And Owen’s been having a fantastic year.”
That fantastic 2025 campaign has included those 42 goals over a 12-game stretch so far, meaning that Corrigan is averaging 3.5 goals each game — more than a hat trick in each contest for the 9-2-1 Vikings.
Corrigan attributed his goal-scoring spree on Monday to the work of his teammates.
“Really just passing,” Corrigan said. “We’ve lived off through balls and over the top.”
He pointed out that teammate Declan Miller probably assisted around 30 of his goals over the course of the fall.
“He’s always been naturally talented. As a freshman, he started,” Richards continued. “He always had a great touch. He’s really developed in size and speed, and his skill level has really come a long way since his freshman year. And those have really been the tools that he used to break that record.”
And that’s a record that is now returning back to Corrigan’s family. His uncle, current Caribou basketball coach Kyle Corrigan, previously held the season scoring record for the Vikings until former Caribou player Ethan Holdsworth eclipsed the mark in recent years.
“So it’s good to have it back in the family, is what we’re joking,” Kyle Corrigan said with a smile after Monday’s game.
Corrigan was happy to see Holdsworth break his record, and he was similarly thrilled to watch his nephew make more Caribou history.
“It’s awesome to see. He’s a very talented athlete. As you can see, he knows how to put the ball in the net,” Corrigan said about his nephew, who also plays for him on the basketball team. “And then basketball-wise, he’s very good too. Pretty blessed to have his athleticism on our team and in our family.”
It also doesn’t hurt that the Caribou basketball team is the reigning Class B state champion, and that the Vikings soccer roster is replete with members of that state title squad.
“Most of these guys played on the state team,” Owen Corrigan explained. “So we know how to win, we know what it feels like.”
Richards said that he moved Corrigan up to striker last year after previously having him in the midfield.
“He’s always been a natural distributor,” Richards said. “We gave him a shot at scoring some goals, and he’s done an excellent job for us.”
Corrigan flashed that scoring ability with lighting speed on Monday, netting three goals in as many minutes at one point during the first half and firmly putting the game away for the Vikings.
Richards also pointed to Corrigan’s experience as a championship-winning basketball player, and the value of having players conditioned to performing in tense, game-defining situations.
“So he knows what it’s like in high pressure situations, and having someone like that is invaluable on the team,” Richards added.
And while Maine high school soccer features a bevy of talented scorers, there is little doubt that Corrigan’s production this season has been on an elevated level.
“A hat trick was pretty rare back in the day, but it seems like he’s really one of the top goal scorers in the state, for sure,” Richards said.
