With the turmoil President Donald Trump and the MAGA party have unleashed on this unsuspecting nation, it is a challenge to point to any one thing that is more horrific than any other. ICE with its reign of terror; the attack on freedom of speech; and the attempt to turn our country into a police state are only a very small part of what is at work with what I see as the fascist takeover by the ruling regime.
The foundation upon which this coup has been built is facilitated by an absent MAGA party, a corrupt Supreme Court, and an executive branch that is essentially allowed to crush democracy with impunity. The protections that have served our country so well — the separation of powers; the rule of law; and the Constitution — no longer seem relevant.
Our “leaders” took an oath to defend the Constitution. They have disregarded that promise. Instead some mock every veteran who has sworn to protect our country, especially the over 400,000 who gave their lives to defeat fascism during World War II. The “secretary of war” and the president showed their contempt for those sworn to protect our country by verbally assaulting their own military leadership.
I am a disabled veteran (Vietnam Era). During my last visit to the Togus VA Healthcare campus in Augusta, I wore a shirt that stated, “Save Our VA.” I wear the shirt often when I attend medical appointments, but I rarely receive comments. This time, though, several veterans said, “I voted for Trump. I never thought he would do this to my country.”
